![]() The performances from Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim were top-notch also. I didn’t think all the kids would die off so quickly, or that in the very first episode Mother would kill Father and then go kill the entire Mithraic Ark and everyone onboard (though there are several scouting ships on the surface, so it’s not like Marcus is the only survivor). I thought this was a terrific series premiere. It’s time to start a new family since the old one was taken from her. She sets it on a crash course for Keppler-22b and then goes to find the children. The ship is all glossy white and sticky red, slick with blood. She walks through the halls shrieking like some nightmarish bird of prey and every single human who attempts to stop her, or to flee, is evaporated into coils of blood and not much else. She masquerades as Marcus and docks on the Ark. We learned earlier that she could change her face into anyone she pleases, like Campion’s dead sister. She enters, tosses him out onto the ground and flies up to the Ark. When she arrives, it appears Mother is able to stop him from taking off with one of her super-powers. She flies up into the air to chase after Marcus who at this point has abandoned Campion and raced back to his small ship (which looks oddly like a whistle). She opens her mouth and screams at the cleric and the other soldier and they die instantly, their faces and bodies ravaged by her shriek. Outside, the three humans are struggling to get Campion back to their ship when Mother emerges, her face a mask of fury and hate. The Mithraic android stops her cold, hurling her back into the hut where he proceeds to beat her viciously-until she overpowers and kills him (or “kills” him, I should say). The next morning they try to grab Campion and Mother rushes to stop them. MORE FROM FORBES The Top 6 Netflix Originals Coming In September 2020 By Erik Kain Mother, it turns out, is no ordinary robot. If she tries to stop them, their own android will kill her. They’ll take the boy with them back to the Ark. She’s an android, likely in some stage of breaking down, and that makes her dangerous. Though Mother has told Campion not to tell them what she is, they have no doubts. Then Marcus says it will be too cold for them to depart that night and begs shelter, which Mother grudgingly provides. They tell her they’re hungry and she shares some of their gruel. They’re all friendly enough, but Mother wants them gone, a fact she repeats numerous times. Marcus (Travis Fimmel) is traveling with an android, a cleric and another soldier. It’s a scouting party from the Ark that came down in a small drop-ship and noticed the settlement. Not long after, men appear walking across their fields. To allow the Mithraic to take Campion goes against their core directive, she argues, and then-when Father won’t listen-flies into a murderous rage, killing Father in her fury and telling Campion later that he broke down and she tossed his body into a worm hole to spare Campion’s feelings.īut it’s only a delay of the inevitable. But when she confronts Father, she’ll hear none of it. Making Father’s case more urgent, leading up to all of this Mother has been displaying signs that she is, indeed, breaking down. ![]() He makes Campion promise not to tell Mother-she won’t understand-but mother gets the truth out of him nevertheless. What will happen when Mother and Father break down? He can’t live all alone in a harsh world. ![]() Campion, he believes, needs to be with his people. When the Ark appears, Father tries to contact it to send them their location. We do know that they were in a massive battle against the atheists and that both sides took heavy, horrible losses, though the Mithraic appear to have come out on top. We don’t learn much about the Mithraic in the first episode. Moments later it cries out, miraculously revived. She clutches the child to her bosom and begins to hum to it. Despite being a robot, she has maternal instincts. Father wants to break it down to use as food to feed the others (very practical) but Mother has hidden depths. They’re tiny, and the sixth one is stillborn. Nine months later, Father takes each infant from their cube and places them in an incubator. Mother brings six of these children to term, hooking herself up to artificial umbilical cords that feed into small cubes where the babies will grow. “Belief in the unreal can comfort the human mind, but it also weakens it,” Mother tells her brood. It was, after all, the follies of religion (the belief in the unreal, as Mother terms it) that was the downfall of humankind. The duo’s creator, a man named Campion, has programmed the androids to raise these children as atheists. The two are Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), atheistic androids who escaped the devastation of Earth with a precious cargo: 12 human fetuses. ![]()
